Graphics, Interactivity, and Instructional Design

Helping clients understand these high-impact components set expectations up front and set the foundation for successful project outcomes. Graphics and multimedia are the easiest place to visualize this concept. Custom photography is more expensive that stock imagery but stock doesn’t always work. Animation is expensive, but sometimes animation is the only way to illustrate a process. There are ways to illuminate key concepts and keep costs within the budget. Interactivity is the level of interaction or control the user has within learning components. It is safe to assume that more user interaction and choice will mean longer development times and higher costs. Instructional Design is what makes training effective and engaging, but it is the hardest component to quantify. Investing in ID can feel a bit like having to put a new water pump in your car. You don’t want to, but a car that doesn’t work won’t get you where you need to go. Providing existing curriculum and high quality supporting materials help to offset ID costs by reducing the time required to research, write, and work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
